Monday Miles & Leadership – December Green

On December 22nd, 2021 I was mowing my yard.

Yes — mowing. In December.

I had a book playing in my headphones, the mower laying down clean stripes across grass that was as green as it gets in mid-summer. The lines were crisp. The color was vibrant. It looked… intentional.

And it made me stop and ask a simple question:

Why does my yard look like this — in late December?

The answer wasn’t complicated.

It looks that way because I’ve invested in it.

I water it consistently.
I cut it regularly.
I fertilize it on schedule.
I edge it, trim it, and take my time with it.
I even blow the clippings back into the lawn to return nutrients to the soil.

The lawn doesn’t look healthy by accident. It looks healthy because of disciplined attention over time.

And that’s when the parallel hit me.

Our relationships operate under the same laws.

Friendships.
Marriage.
Our kids.
Our teams.

None of them stay green and vibrant without intentional care. You can’t neglect them for months and expect them to look strong when it matters. If you stop watering them with time, stop fertilizing them with encouragement, stop trimming away resentment or misunderstandings — they don’t stay neutral.

They fade.

They dry out.

They wilt.

Relationships, like a lawn, reflect the level of stewardship we provide.

The question isn’t whether you value your people.

The question is whether your daily habits prove it.

If you want pronounced stripes in your marriage… invest in it.
If you want vibrant friendships… show up consistently.
If you want strong connections with your kids… spend the time now.

December green doesn’t happen by chance.

It happens by design.
