Monday Miles & Leadership – The Starting Line Moves

One of the biggest lessons running has taught me is this:

The finish line is never really the finish line.

Cross one finish line…
…and before long, you’re looking for the next starting line.

This past week I officially stepped into a new role as Key Account Sales Manager – Heavy-Duty & Hydraulics at Gates.

I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity.
But here’s what’s interesting.
The day I accepted the position wasn’t the finish line.
It was the starting line.

There’s a temptation after reaching a goal to think,
“I made it.”
I’ve learned that’s the wrong mindset.

Whether it’s running, leadership, or life, every milestone comes with a new responsibility.

A new standard.
A new opportunity to serve.
A new opportunity to learn.

The title may change.
The commitment shouldn’t.
The habits that helped you earn the opportunity are the same habits that help you succeed once you’re there.

Show up prepared.
Listen first.
Communicate well.
Build relationships.
Stay curious.
Serve others.

Those principles don’t stop because the business card changes.
In fact, they matter even more.

Running reminds me that every race I finish simply points me toward another starting line.
Leadership works the same way.
Success isn’t reaching the next level.
It’s being willing to start over with the humility to learn again.

Every finish line creates a new starting line.

And that’s one of the best parts of the journey.
